物質使用の**[[control, impaired]]**の様態のひとつであり、物質使用を避ける能力あるいは意欲を欠くこと。ジェリネックによって1960年に定式化された、**[[control, loss of]]**のふたつの様態のひとつ。もう一方は、いったん飲み始めたたら飲酒の中止ができなくなること（飲酒中止の不能）である。
