inability to abstain — 断酒不能
A form of impaired control over the use of a substance, such that there is an inability or unwillingness to refrain from substance use. As used in Jellinek's 1960 formulation, this is one of two forms of loss of control, the other being inability to stop once started.

物質使用のコントロールの減弱の様態のひとつであり、物質使用を避ける能力あるいは意欲を欠くこと。ジェリネックによって1960年に定式化された、コントロールの喪失のふたつの様態のひとつ。もう一方は、いったん飲み始めたたら飲酒の中止ができなくなること（飲酒中止の不能）である。
