Often, a place of residence that acts as an intermediate stage between an inpatient or residential therapeutic programme and fully independent living in the community. The term applies to accommodation for alcohol- or drug-dependent individuals endeavouring to maintain their sobriety (compare therapeutic community). There are also halfway houses for individuals with psychiatric disorders or leaving prison.

居住のための場所で、入院あるいは全寮制の治療プログラムと、地域社会での完全に自立した生活の、中間段階としての役割を果たすもの。この用語は、アルコールもしくは薬物依存の人がソブラエティを維持する努力をするための宿泊施設に対して用いられる(比較 治療共同体)。その他に、精神疾患の人や服役を終えた人のためのハーフウェイハウスもある。
