A pattern of psychoactive substance use that is causing damage to health. The damage may be physical (e.g. hepatitis following injection of drugs) or mental (e.g. depressive episodes secondary to heavy **alcohol** intake). Harmful use commonly, but not invariably, has adverse social consequences; social consequences in themselves, however, are not sufficient to justify a diagnosis of harmful use.\\
The term was introduced in ICD-10 and supplanted "non-dependent use" as a diagnostic term. The closest equivalent in other diagnostic systems (e.g. DSM-IIIR) is **substance abuse**, which usually includes social consequences.\\

健康を害する原因となる精神作用物質の使用パターン。その害は身体的なもの（例：薬物注射によって引き起こされた肝炎）であるか、あるいは精神的なもの（例：**[[alcohol]]**の大量摂取の後の二次的な鬱エピソード）である。有害な使用は、必ずではないが一般的に、社会に対して悪影響を、またその人自身に社会的に重大な結果をもたらすが、この社会的な影響のみで有害な使用と診断することは正しくない。\\
この用語はICD-10にて導入され、それまでの診断用語としての「非依存使用（non-dependent use）」を置き換えた。他の診断システム（例：DSM-IIIR）における最も近い同義語は**[[substance abuse]]**であるが、そちらは社会的な悪影響を含めたものとなっている。\\
